How to become a qualified Room in Roof Installer

The Level 3 NVQ in Room in Roof Insulation is nationally recognised proof that you can do the job to the standard the industry expects. Tap any section below to open it.

Course overview

The Level 3 NVQ in Room in Roof Insulation is for people working in energy efficiency and construction who focus on room-in-roof insulation. This type of insulation improves the energy efficiency of attic and loft conversions, cutting heat loss and making homes more sustainable. On completion you are equipped to work as a competent Room in Roof Installer.

It has been developed for achievement in a real workplace environment, so you need to be employed to take it. You choose optional units that match the work you do, across framed sections, internal walls and cold roofs, and it suits anyone contributing to the growing demand for energy-efficient homes.

Under PAS 2030 and PAS 2035, operatives working on funded retrofit must hold a recognised qualification for the measure they install. For room in roof insulation, this NVQ is that qualification. The qualification is delivered by Unyte Academy, a NOCN approved centre based in Willenhall in the West Midlands.

New to the trade? This is a skilled worker route, not a beginner course. Start with the Level 2 Award in Understanding Domestic Retrofit, which needs no experience at all.
Who this course is for
  • Room in roof installers — insulating attic rooms and loft conversions.
  • Loft and cold roof installers stepping up — the optional units include insulating cold roofs, so it builds on that work.
  • Operatives on funded schemes — who need a recognised qualification for the measure they install.
  • Employers training a team — group rates apply, and CITB registered employers can claim up to £600 back per learner.
What good room in roof insulation work looks like

A room in the roof has more junctions than any other measure: sloping ceilings, stud walls, flat ceilings and gables all meet in one room, and each needs treating.

Your assessor will want to see work like this on your own jobs:

  • Insulating every element: slopes, stud walls, flat ceilings and gables
  • Keeping ventilation paths open behind the insulation where the roof needs them
  • Sealing the junctions for airtightness
  • Treating the cold voids behind stud walls
  • Dealing with services and access hatches without leaving gaps
Entry requirements
  • Aged 18 or over — at the point of registration.
  • Currently employed — you must be in work to complete the qualification.
  • Existing experience — installing room in roof insulation. NVQs are a skilled worker route.
  • Access to suitable work — so your assessor has live jobs to observe.
