How to become a qualified Site Supervisor
The Level 3 NVQ in Occupational Work Supervision is nationally recognised proof that you can do the job to the standard the industry expects. Tap any section below to open it.
Course overview
The Level 3 NVQ in Occupational Work Supervision (OWS) is for people already supervising work on construction sites: chargehands, foremen, gangers and trade supervisors. It proves your competence as a supervisor, assessed on the work you already run, and it is the qualification the CSCS Gold Supervisor card asks for.
It has been developed for achievement in a real workplace environment, so you need to be employed in a supervisory role to take it. There is no classroom and no time off site: you complete the knowledge element online and your assessor observes and reviews how you supervise on your own jobs.
Main contractors increasingly expect everyone who supervises on site to hold a Gold Supervisor CSCS card, and that card asks for a Level 3 supervisory NVQ. This NVQ is nationally recognised proof that you supervise work to the required standard. The qualification is delivered by Unyte Academy, a NOCN approved centre based in Willenhall in the West Midlands.
Who this course is for
- Site and trade supervisors — running a team or a work area and needing formal recognition.
- Chargehands, foremen and gangers — who supervise others as part of their job.
- Operatives going for a Gold Supervisor CSCS card — the NVQ is the qualification the card asks for.
- Employers developing supervisors — group rates apply, and CITB registered employers can claim up to £600 back per learner.
What good site supervision work looks like
A good supervisor gets the work done safely, to programme and to specification, and keeps the people, materials and other trades on their area organised.
Your assessor will want to see work like this on your own jobs:
- Planning the work and allocating tasks and resources across the team
- Checking work against drawings, specifications and quality standards
- Running toolbox talks and making sure safe systems of work are followed
- Coordinating materials, plant and other trades on your work area
- Keeping records of progress, inspections and issues
- Dealing with problems on site and keeping managers and clients informed
Entry requirements
- Aged 18 or over — at the point of registration.
- Currently employed — you must be in work to complete the qualification.
- Existing experience — working as a supervisor on site. NVQs are a skilled worker route.
- Access to suitable work — so your assessor has live jobs to observe.
