How to become a qualified Dry Lining Finisher
The Level 2 NVQ in Dry Lining Finishing is nationally recognised proof that you can do the job to the standard the industry expects. Tap any section below to open it.
Course overview
The Level 2 NVQ in Interior Systems – Dry Lining Finishing is for people already finishing dry lined walls and ceilings. It lets you demonstrate and recognise your skills, knowledge and understanding, and prove your competence in a real workplace so you can work in dry lining finishing within the construction industry.
It has been developed for achievement in a real workplace environment, so you need to be employed to take it. It helps you build enabling, fundamental and transferable practical skills, backed by the underpinning knowledge, and you are assessed on the jobs you already do.
Many sites now expect every operative to hold a CSCS card and a recognised qualification for their trade. This NVQ is nationally recognised proof that you finish dry lining to the required standard. The qualification is delivered by Unyte Academy, a NOCN approved centre based in Willenhall in the West Midlands.
Who this course is for
- Dry lining finishers — taping, jointing and finishing plasterboard walls and ceilings.
- Interior systems operatives — who want formal certification for the finishing work they do.
- Operatives going for a CSCS card — the NVQ supports your application once your certificate is issued.
- Employers training a team — group rates apply, and CITB registered employers can claim up to £600 back per learner.
What good dry lining finishing work looks like
Finishing is the part of dry lining everyone sees. Good finishing work leaves joints and angles flat, smooth and ready to decorate with no further preparation.
Your assessor will want to see work like this on your own jobs:
- Taping and jointing board joints, by hand or with tools
- Finishing internal and external angles, using beads where needed
- Filling fixings and making good damaged board faces
- Feathering joints so they disappear under paint
- Sanding and preparing the surface for decoration
Entry requirements
- Aged 18 or over — at the point of registration.
- Currently employed — you must be in work to complete the qualification.
- Existing experience — finishing dry lining. NVQs are a skilled worker route.
- Access to suitable work — so your assessor has live jobs to observe.

If you tape, joint and finish plasterboard, this is the right NVQ. If you mainly put up stud and hang boards, you need the Dry Lining Fixing NVQ instead. If you do both, you can take both.
Both count. You are assessed finishing dry lined walls and ceilings using the methods you already use on site, whether that is hand taping or taping tools.
