How to become a qualified External Wall Insulation Boarder and Finisher
The Level 3 NVQ in External Wall Insulation Boarder and Finisher is nationally recognised proof that you can do the job to the standard the industry expects. Tap any section below to open it.
Course overview
The Level 3 NVQ in External Wall Insulation Boarder and Finisher is for professionals installing external wall insulation, on new build projects or retrofitting it to existing homes. It covers both boarding and finishing, so on completion you are equipped to work as a competent external wall insulation boarder and finisher.
It has been developed for achievement in a real workplace environment, so you need to be employed to take it. At Level 3 it goes beyond installation into confirming methods of work, organising work activities and resources, and maintaining good working relationships on site. Successful completion supports your application for a CSCS card.
Under PAS 2030 and PAS 2035, operatives working on funded retrofit must hold a recognised qualification for the measure they install. For external wall insulation, this NVQ is that qualification. The qualification is delivered by Unyte Academy, a NOCN approved centre based in Willenhall in the West Midlands.
Who this course is for
- External wall insulation installers — boarding and finishing EWI systems on new build or retrofit projects.
- Renderers moving into EWI — already applying surface finishes and needing the insulation qualification.
- Experienced operatives stepping up — the Level 3 units cover planning work and resources on site.
- Employers training a team — group rates apply, and CITB registered employers can claim up to £600 back per learner.
What good external wall insulation work looks like
External wall insulation changes the outside of a building, so the detailing at openings and edges decides whether it keeps water out and lasts.
Your assessor will want to see work like this on your own jobs:
- Checking the wall is sound and preparing the substrate
- Fixing boards with the right adhesive and mechanical fixing pattern
- Detailing around windows, doors, sills and at the base of the wall
- Bedding mesh into the basecoat with the correct overlaps
- Keeping the insulation continuous at reveals and eaves to avoid cold bridges
Entry requirements
- Aged 18 or over — at the point of registration.
- Currently employed — you must be in work to complete the qualification.
- Existing experience — installing external wall insulation. NVQs are a skilled worker route.
- Access to suitable work — so your assessor has live jobs to observe.

Yes. An NVQ is achieved in a real workplace environment, so you must be employed and already installing external wall insulation. Your competence is assessed on your own live jobs. If you are new to the trade, start with the Level 2 Award in Understanding Domestic Retrofit instead.
No. The knowledge units are online question packs you complete at your own pace, and your assessor comes to you to observe you at work. There is no classroom attendance.

Internal Quality Assurance. Before anything is submitted to the awarding body, a second qualified verifier independently reviews your portfolio and your assessor's decisions. It is a required step on every NVQ and it is what makes the qualification stand up.
The qualification supports your application to the Construction Skills Certification Scheme. You apply to CSCS directly once your certificate is issued.
Under PAS 2030 and PAS 2035, operatives working on funded retrofit must hold a recognised qualification for the measure they install. For external wall insulation, this NVQ is that qualification.
It depends which side of the wall you work on. External wall insulation is fixed to the outside of the building and finished with render or another finish. Internal wall insulation is fitted to the inside face of the walls. Take the NVQ for the one you install. If you install both, you can take the Internal Wall Insulation NVQ as well.
Yes. This is the Boarder and Finisher pathway, so it covers both fixing the insulation boards and applying the surface finishes to the external wall insulation.
No. You are assessed on your own jobs using the system you already install. The NVQ proves your competence in the work rather than in one manufacturer's product, so keep any system training certificates as well.
If your employer is registered with CITB, they can claim up to £600 back once you complete. That is the only route the £600 applies to — it is not available to individuals or to businesses that are not CITB registered. Everyone can pay in 3 interest-free instalments. Send us your details and we will confirm what applies to you before you commit.
Yes. Group rates apply when you enrol several operatives on one agreement, and we handle the CITB paperwork with you. Use the form below and tell us how many learners you have.
