How to become a Retrofit Assessor
To work as a Retrofit Assessor you need a Level 3 Domestic Energy Assessor qualification, then the Level 3 Certificate for Retrofit Assessor. This course gives you the second. Tap any section below to open it.
Course overview
PAS 2035 sets out how to assess homes for retrofit, identify improvement options, design and specify energy efficiency measures, and monitor retrofit projects. It came out of the Each Home Counts review and gives the industry a framework for whole-house retrofit of existing homes — work that is essential to cutting carbon emissions from housing.
The ABBE Level 3 Certificate for Retrofit Assessor covers the PAS 2035 Retrofit Assessor role. It gives you the knowledge, understanding and skills to assess a home and produce a condition report. That report is lodged on the TrustMark Data Warehouse, where Retrofit Coordinators and other stakeholders use it to progress retrofit projects.
The course is delivered by Unyte Academy, an ABBE approved centre based in Willenhall in the West Midlands. In 2026 alone, more than 150 Domestic Energy Assessors trained and passed with us.
Entry requirements
You must hold a Level 3 Domestic Energy Assessor (DEA) qualification before you start this course. It is the foundation the Retrofit Assessor role builds on.

What does a Retrofit Assessor do?
A Retrofit Assessor evaluates homes to work out which retrofit measures are suitable. They collect and analyse information on the building fabric, how the home is occupied and how it uses energy, and that assessment is what the rest of a retrofit project is planned from.
Retrofit Assessors work with housing associations, local councils, energy companies and private consultancies, and play a vital role in improving the energy efficiency of existing homes.
