How to become a qualified Under Floor Insulation Installer

The Level 2 NVQ in Under Floor Insulation is nationally recognised proof that you can do the job to the standard the industry expects. Tap any section below to open it.

Course overview

The Level 2 NVQ in Under Floor Insulation is for people already working in construction who install under floor insulation. It proves your competence on the measure you fit, assessed on your own live jobs, and opens up more work on retrofit projects delivered under PAS 2035.

It is a real-workplace qualification, which means you need to be employed to take it. It lets you recognise the skills, knowledge and understanding you already have, and demonstrate your competence in the workplace when carrying out the role of under floor insulation. Once you hold it, you can go on to apply for your CSCS skilled worker card.

Under PAS 2030 and PAS 2035, operatives working on funded retrofit must hold a recognised qualification for the measure they install. For under floor insulation, this NVQ is that qualification. The qualification is delivered by Unyte Academy, a NOCN approved centre based in Willenhall in the West Midlands.

New to the trade? This is a skilled worker route, not a beginner course. Start with the Level 2 Award in Understanding Domestic Retrofit, which needs no experience at all.
Who this course is for
  • Under floor insulation installers — already fitting insulation to suspended floors and needing formal certification.
  • Spray foam operatives — the optional spraying unit covers sprayed insulation to suspended floors.
  • Operatives on funded schemes — who need a recognised qualification for the measure they install.
  • Employers training a team — group rates apply, and CITB registered employers can claim up to £600 back per learner.
What good under floor insulation work looks like

Under floor insulation is fitted below suspended timber ground floors, either from above with the boards lifted or from the void below. The main risks are moisture and blocked ventilation, so good work is about keeping the void dry and the insulation in place.

Your assessor will want to see work like this on your own jobs:

  • Keeping air bricks and the under floor ventilation path clear
  • Fitting insulation tight between the joists, with no gaps for cold air to bypass it
  • Supporting the insulation with netting or battens so it cannot sag away from the floor
  • Surveying the void and protecting services before any spray insulation goes in
  • Sealing gaps at skirtings and floor edges to cut draughts
Entry requirements
  • Aged 18 or over — at the point of registration.
  • Currently employed — you must be in work to complete the qualification.
  • Existing experience — installing under floor insulation. NVQs are a skilled worker route.
  • Access to suitable work — so your assessor has live jobs to observe.
