How to become a qualified Passive Fire Protection operative

Course overview

The Level 2 NVQ in Passive Fire Protection is for workers with extensive experience in the field. Passive fire protection is the installation of fire-resistant materials and systems that help contain and control the spread of fire in a building — work that is critical to safety and to compliance with fire regulations.

The qualification lets you demonstrate your competence in passive fire protection, which is vital for meeting health, safety and fire safety regulations in the construction industry. It has been developed for achievement in a real workplace environment, so you need to be employed to take it, and you are assessed doing the work you already do.

Passive fire protection is safety-critical work, and clients and principal contractors increasingly expect operatives to prove their competence. This NVQ is nationally recognised evidence that you install fire protection to the required standard. The qualification is delivered by Unyte Academy, a NOCN approved centre based in Willenhall in the West Midlands.

New to the trade? This is a skilled worker route, not a beginner course. Start with the Level 2 Award in Understanding Domestic Retrofit, which needs no experience at all.
Who this course is for
  • Fire stopping and sealing operatives — installing penetration seals, fire stopping and cavity barriers.
  • Fire resisting system installers — erecting fire resisting walls, linings, ceilings and door assemblies.
  • Coatings and cladding operatives — applying reactive or non-reactive coatings, or dry cladding to structural steel.
  • Employers training a team — group rates apply, and CITB registered employers can claim up to £600 back per learner.
What good passive fire protection work looks like

Passive fire protection only works if every opening is sealed with a tested product, installed exactly as the tested detail says. Clients now routinely ask for evidence of competence and a record of each installation.

Your assessor will want to see work like this on your own jobs:

  • Matching each penetration seal to its tested and certified detail
  • Fire stopping around pipes, cables and ducts where they pass through compartment walls and floors
  • Fitting fire collars, wraps and batts to the manufacturer‚Äôs instructions
  • Installing fire resisting doors, ceilings and cavity barriers without gaps
  • Labelling and recording each installation so it can be inspected later
Entry requirements
  • Aged 18 or over — at the point of registration.
  • Currently employed — you must be in work to complete the qualification.
  • Existing experience — installing passive fire protection. NVQs are a skilled worker route.
  • Access to suitable work — so your assessor has live jobs to observe.
