How to become a qualified Cold Roof Insulation Installer

To work on funded retrofit you need a recognised qualification for the measure you install. For cold roof and loft insulation, this Level 2 NVQ is that qualification. Tap any section below to open it.

Course overview

Under PAS 2030:2019, operatives working on funded retrofit must hold a recognised qualification for the measure they install. This NVQ is that evidence for cold roof and loft insulation, and it meets the operative competence expected under PAS 2030 and PAS 2035.

It has been developed for achievement in a real workplace environment, which means you need to be employed to take it. You are assessed against performance and knowledge statements derived from the National Occupational Standards for your occupation, by an occupationally competent assessor whose job is to work with you and help you finish.

The qualification applies in both the public and private sectors, and it serves as a foundation for progressing to Level 3. It is supported by the Insulated Render and Cladding Association (INCA) and delivered by Unyte Academy, a NOCN approved centre based in Willenhall in the West Midlands.

New to the trade? This is a skilled worker route, not a beginner course. Start with the Level 2 Award in Understanding Domestic Retrofit, which needs no experience at all.
Who this course is for
  • Cold roof and loft installers — already fitting the measure and needing formal certification.
  • Operatives on funded schemes — who need a recognised qualification to meet PAS 2030 and PAS 2035.
  • Installers going for a CSCS card — the NVQ supports your application once your certificate is issued.
  • Employers training a team — group rates apply, and CITB registered employers can claim up to £600 back per learner.
What good cold roof and loft insulation work looks like

Cold roof insulation goes at ceiling level, so the loft above stays cold and has to stay ventilated. Good work keeps the insulation working and the roof space dry.

Your assessor will want to see work like this on your own jobs:

  • Keeping eaves ventilation clear, with trays or baffles so air still flows over the insulation
  • Laying the insulation in two layers, the second across the joists, without squashing it
  • Insulating and draught-proofing the loft hatch
  • Keeping safe clearances around recessed lights, flues and cables
  • Insulating pipes and tanks in the loft, which gets colder once the ceiling is insulated
Entry requirements
  • Aged 18 or over — at the point of registration.
  • Currently employed — you must be in work to complete the qualification.
  • Existing experience — installing cold roof and loft insulation. This is a skilled worker route.
  • Access to suitable work — so your assessor has live jobs to observe.
